Discovery of four X-ray quasars behind the Large Magellanic Cloud

چکیده
We present the discovery of four X-ray quasars (zem = 0.26, 0.53, 0.61, 1.63) located behind the Large Magellanic Cloud; three of them are located behind the bar of the LMC. The quasars were identified via spectroscopy of optical counterparts to X-ray sources found serendipitously by the Chandra X-ray Observatory satellite. All four quasars have archival V I photometry from the OGLE-II project; one of them was found by OGLE to be variable. We present the properties of the quasars and discuss their possible applications. Subject headings: Magellanic Clouds — quasars: individual (OGLE050736.52–684751.7, OGLE050833.29–685427.5, OGLE050924.05–672124.1, OGLE051853.19–690217.7) — X-rays: general

New X-ray quasars behind the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present five X-ray quasars behind the Small Magellanic Cloud, increasing the number of known quasars behind the SMC by ∼40%. They were identified via follow-up spectroscopy of serendipitous sources from the Chandra X-ray Observatory matched with objects from the OGLE database. All quasars lie behind dense parts of the SMC, and could be very useful for proper motion studies. We analyze X-ray ...
متن کاملDiscovery of nine quasars behind the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present the discovery of nine quasars behind the Large Magellanic Cloud, with emission redshifts ranging from 0.07 to 2.0. Six of them were identified as part of the systematic variability-based search for QSOs in the objects from the OGLE-II database. Combination of variability-based selection of candidates with the candidates’ colours appears to be a powerful technique for identifying quas...

Data are given for sixteen extragalactic objects (predominantly AGN) behind the Magellanic Clouds and for 146 quasar candidates behind the nearby were identiied by their X-ray emission, and precise optical and X-ray positions and optical photometry and spectra are presented for all of these. The quasar candidates surrounding the other nearby galaxies were identiied through a CFHT slitless spect...
متن کاملVariability-selected quasars behind the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present followup spectroscopic observations of quasar candidates in the Small Magellanic Cloud selected by Eyer from the OGLE database. Of twelve observed objects identified as “QSO Candidate”, five are confirmed quasars, with the emission redshifts ranging from 0.28 to 2.16. Two of those quasars were also recently identified independently in the MACHO database by Geha et al. We discuss the ...
متن کاملThe discovery of 96 s pulsations from the variable X-ray source 1SAX J0544.1-710 in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report the discovery of a ∼ 96 s period X-ray pulsar in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The BeppoSAX X-ray spectrum is well fitted by an absorbed power-law model with photon index ∼ 0.5. The unabsorbed luminosity in the 2-10 keV energy range is ∼ 9×1035 erg s−1. The BeppoSAX position (40′′ uncertainty radius) of 1SAX J0544.1710 was found to be consistent with that of the A...
